Riding the Nandi with the trident in her right hand and a lotus in her left hand, Ma Shailaputri is the powerful form of Durga. This princess of the Himalayas is the reincarnation of Sati Devi. In her previous birth, Devi sacrificed herself in a yagna because her father, King Daksh humiliated her in public. Lord Shiva reiterated into a deep meditation after the loss of his consort. Thereafter, the land was terrorized by the demon, Tarakasur. He was destined to be killed by Shiva’s child.

All the gods and demigods prayed for Sati's return and she came back as the daughter of the mountains. The goddess Shailaputri possesses the combined power of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Thus, this strong form of Durga is worshipped on the first day of Navratri. The colour Red is symbolically associated with Ma Shailaputri as it perfectly depicts her powerful spirit.
